About cardifftalk.co.uk

Cardiff is a capital city without losing the feeling of somewhere people know by neighbourhood. The civic centre, the castle and Bute Park sit close to the shopping arcades, Cardiff Central and the roar that rises from Principality Stadium on a match day. A short way south, the city opens into Cardiff Bay — Bae Caerdydd — where the Senedd, Wales Millennium Centre, Mermaid Quay and Roald Dahl Plass give the waterfront a newer rhythm.

The Welsh identity is not a backdrop here. It is heard in the language, seen in the bilingual signs and carried through the institutions that make Cardiff the centre of national life: Welsh Government, Senedd Cymru, the universities, the arts and the national sporting calendar. But Cardiff is also practical and ordinary in the best sense — a city of buses, students, high streets, hospital appointments, independent cafés, terraces, parks and people crossing town for work or a night out.

The centre has its own layers. Cardiff Castle and the Civic Centre hold the formal history. Grey stone, arcades and St David’s lead into the retail core. Cardiff Market keeps the city’s everyday trade close to the castle, while Womanby Street, Mill Lane, Church Street and High Street change pace after dark. Around the centre, Cathays and Roath carry university and local-life energy; Pontcanna and Canton bring cafés, food and creative businesses; Riverside and Grangetown meet the Taff and the Bay. Llandaff, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Heath, Llanishen, Ely, Caerau, Fairwater, Penylan and Cyncoed each have their own local geography.

cardifftalk.co.uk is for finding what is happening, where to go, which services are useful and how to get a better sense of Cardiff than a list of capital-city landmarks can provide.

What we cover

We cover:

  • things to do, exhibitions, performances and family days out;
  • local events, festivals, Welsh-language culture and community activity;
  • food, drink, shopping and independent businesses;
  • practical local services and straightforward explainers;
  • neighbourhood guides and everyday lifestyle;
  • rail, bus, Metro, walking, cycling and getting-around information;
  • Cardiff’s history, rugby, music, arts, universities, parks and changing places.

A page might be about a Wales match at Principality Stadium, a concert at Wales Millennium Centre, a walk through Bute Park, food in Roath, an exhibition at National Museum Cardiff, a Taff Trail cycle, a service in Cathays or a day around Cardiff Bay. The Welsh and English names matter where they are official or natural, but they should never be pasted on for effect. The local detail should fit the place being covered.

Cardiff, Caerdydd and the wider region

Cardiff / Caerdydd and the City and County of Cardiff are not the same as the wider Cardiff Capital Region or South Wales. The Vale of Glamorgan contains Penarth and Cardiff Airport; it is connected to Cardiff but is a separate local authority. Newport, Caerphilly County, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend, Swansea and Bristol are not Cardiff neighbourhoods.

The same care applies to transport. Cardiff Central, Cardiff Queen Street, Cardiff Bus and Transport for Wales serve different parts of the network. Cardiff Airport is near Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan, not within Cardiff Council. The South Wales Metro is regional, not simply a Cardiff Council service.

Useful details, not just landmarks

Rail and bus services, station works, event-day road closures, stadium access, theatre programmes, opening hours, airport links and regeneration projects can change. We aim to keep practical details current and point readers back to the relevant organiser, operator, venue, council, hospital or transport provider when a final confirmation is needed.

cardifftalk.co.uk is published independently. Recommendations are kept separate from advertising, paid listings and affiliate links. A listing or link does not mean that Cardiff Council, Welsh Government, Senedd Cymru, Transport for Wales, Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, the Welsh Rugby Union, a venue or another named organisation endorses the site.
